Correct method of use for ostomy bags and the full care process

Ostomy bags are a core supply for the daily care of ostomy patients. Standardized use and care can effectively prevent ostomy infection and skin damage and improve quality of life. The specific operations should follow a fixed order. Before care, wash hands thoroughly and prepare a new ostomy bag, ostomy skin protective powder, skin barrier film, scissors, and other supplies. First, gently remove the old ostomy bag, slowly peeling it off from top to bottom to avoid pulling and damaging the surrounding skin. Then clean the stoma and surrounding skin, gently wiping with warm water, and wait for the skin to dry completely. Next, trim the ostomy bag baseplate according to the actual size of the stoma. The opening diameter should be 1-2 millimeters larger than the edge of the stoma to prevent pressure on the stoma mucosa. After trimming is completed, apply a thin layer of skin protective powder and spray skin barrier film, waiting for it to dry completely to form a protective layer. Then align the baseplate with the stoma and apply it flat, pressing firmly from the center outward to expel air and ensure a snug seal. Finally, fasten the ostomy bag closure. Daily care requires checking the fit of the baseplate every day and promptly emptying the stool in the bag to avoid fullness and leakage. It is recommended to replace the ostomy bag once every 3-5 days. If the baseplate lifts, or if the skin becomes red, swollen, or itchy, replace it immediately and provide symptomatic care, keeping the stoma area clean and dry.
